1 – Only one place to start I’m afraid and that’s with the Ireland match. I thought it was a very poor performance and although we created a few clear cut chances of our own the Bulgarians were well deserving of the draw. The full back positions are a joke, the centre of midfield is seriously lightweight and lacking in technique and while Doyle and Keane are willing workers up front they can’t seem to stick the ball in the net on a regular basis for Ireland. Today sees the release of The Damned United, the fictionalised account of Brian Cloughs 44 day spell in charge of Leeds United in 1974. It’s a brilliant read that is almost impossible to put down once you’ve read the first few pages, although there is a danger it can be taken too literally. Nevertheless I would recommend it for anyone with an interest in football, or indeed anyone on the lookout for a great novel to keep them entertained.
Check out the trailer for the movie above. Michael Sheen plays Clough and from what I’ve seen looks to have nailed the role. Bear in mind that the movie differs quite dramatically from the book. The inner monologues that make up The Damned United are dispensed with and instead there is more emphasis on the comic value of Clough. Anyone who saw the ITV documentary on him last Wednesday could see there is a gold mine of hilarious one liners to be taken from the Clough library. Continue reading
